Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka is a former No.1 WTA tennis player in both singles and doubles. In total she has won 20 career titles, including a 14 singles and 6 doubles. She began training at the Minsk academy in 2014 concentrating on low-level professional tennis rather than junior tournaments. In 2016 she made the top 200 and made her Federation Cup debut. In 2017 she made the top 100 and won the Mumbai Open, the biggest success of her career to that date. By 2019 Sabalenka had made the top 10 in singles and number 2 in doubles, partnering with partnering with Elise Mertens. By 2021 she rose to the world number 1 for doubles and had won three WTA titles, including the Qatar Open, The Madrid Open and lost in teh semi-finals at Wimbledon against Karolína Plíšková in three sets.
During 2022 and 2023 she became WTA runner up, reached her second US Open semi-finals, became the Australian Open champion, and hit the number 1 spot! By 2024 Sabalenka had won her second Australian Open and won two WTA1000 finals. She exhibits a powerful and aggressive style with accompanying grunts but swears that she never hears herself when playing! Sabalenka refers to herself as a ‘tiger’ and has a tattoo of the animal on her left arm.
