Hailing from Exeter in Devon, top division rugby union club Exeter Chiefs have been playing in the Premiership since its inception.
The club was founded back in 1871, quickly making history when they participated in the first match played against New Zealand on English soil. From that game ,they adopted their now infamous name the All Blacks. Ironically the Chiefs themselves now play in a black and white 1st kit.
At first Exeter Chiefs were known as Exeter Rugby Club, officially changing their name in 1999, reviving a nickname that had become popular in the 1930s. Despite concerns over offensive cultural appropriation the club’s moniker and name has remained the same since this time – depicting a Native American chief in bold yellow and red.
It wasn’t until the 1990s however that the Chiefs turned semi-professional, entering the premiership and RFU Championship in 2009. Despite their relatively low profile in rugby union, they are the only club to win all four top tiers of English rugby – with a Premiership win in 2017, an RFU Championship in 2010, National League 1 in 1997 and National League 2 in 1996. Notable players include John Batchelor, Richard Baxter and Greg Bateman. BBC Sport dubbed the club’s rise to prominence an ‘under the radar success story’ – as they quickly gained success and fame within a matter of months following their Heineken Cup performance.
