Wigan Athletic are as the name suggests, based in Wigan, in Greater Manchester. Wigan currently play in the English Championship or the EFL Championship. They achieved promotion into the league following a successful 2021-22 campaign. Wigan play their home games at the 25,000 all-seater stadium, the DW Stadium. They moved to the ground in 1999, having previously played at the older Springfield Park stadium. Their home colours are blue and white striped shirts, blue shorts and socks. Wigan reached the League Cup Final in 2006 but were beaten by Man United. They gained their revenge on the city of Manchester in 2013 by beating the blue half of Manchester in the FA Cup Final. It was bittersweet for the Latics that year because they were also relegated in the same season. Relegation from the Championship was to follow in 2015, followed by promotion back the following season.
Dave Whelan is a key figure in Wigan’s history. He acquired the club in 1995 and provided money to help them build their new stadium and take them to the Premier League. They stayed in the Premier League between 2005 and 2013
