Portsmouth FC are based in Hampshire on the south coast of England. Pompey, as they are otherwise known as, play in the English Football League One. This is the 3rd tier of the professional English league. Sir John Brickwood founded the club in the 19th century, on 5th April 1898. Portsmouth have a uniqueness unlike any club in Britain. They play their games at Fratton Park on Portsea Island. This makes them the only professional club to have a stadium off the mainland of Great Britain. Fratton Park holds approximately 20,000 people where the club plays in white shorts and blue shirts. Many of the fanatic Pompey fans would cherish a signed Portsmouth shirt!
Portsmouth have been League Champions in the top tier on two occasions, both in the 1940’s. They have also won the FA Cup twice, in 1939 and most recently in 2008. The club is only one of a few clubs to have won all four tiers of the English league. In fact, they have won five professional championships if including the Football League 3rd Division South in 1924.
The Premier League era between 2003 and 2010 was known as the Harry and Jim partnership. Harry Redknapp and Jim Smith steered them to the Premier League. Their best season was in 2008 when they won the FA Cup and came 8th in the Premier League. Financial problems impacted the club towards the end of this era. The club however has bounced back since.
