Luton Town FC are based in Bedfordshire and were the first football club in southern England to turn professional. They were founded in 1885, making payments to players as early as 1890. Luton joined the football league in the 1897-1898 season. They left at the turn of the century due to financial reasons, re-joining again in 1920. Luton are nicknamed the ‘Hatters’ and play their home matches at Kenilworth Road, where they have been since 1905. The club have experienced many high and lows, including major cup wins, a number of financial crises, promotions and relegations and some strong periods of success.
Luton Town’s most successful era started in the 1980s. They won the Second Division in 1981-1982, gaining promotion to the First Division. The Hatters remained in the First Division until they were relegated in 1991-1992. They won their only major honour in 1988 beating Arsenal 3-2 in the Football League Cup Final. Following relegation, they experienced Financial difficulties causing the club to drop a number of divisions.
They were docked 30 points in 2008-2009 due to financial irregularities and were relegated to the non-league football for five seasons. They won the Conference Title in 2013-2014 and now play in the Championship.
Luton Town beat Coventry City in a thrilling penalty shoot out, securing their place in the Premiership for the first time in their history in 2023. This was after successful relegations taking them down to the fifth tier of British football. Quite an achievement!
