Mike Hakkinen was also known as the Flying Finn. He is a former Formula One racing with two Formula One World Championships under his belt. The Finnish legend won 20 F1 Grand Prix in his hugely successful racing career. He had 51 podium finishes, of which 20 of these were victories. His debut Grand Prix was in 1991 where he raced in the United States Grand Prix. Hakkinen’s first victory was 6 years later in 1997 at the European Grand Prix.
The Finn’s racing career starting on the kart track aged just five. He won a number of championships before progressing to Formula Three. Team Lotus snapped him up in 1991 to drive in F1 before McLaren signed him in 1992. He won his first World Championship in 1998 after a hugely successful season. During that season he notched up 8 Grand Prix victories to take the Championship, and also the Constructor’s Championship. This made him a global superstar and hugely popular across the F1 circuit. He would often get mobbed by fans wanting a Mike Hakkinen signature on their merchandise. The Finn followed up the 1998 Championship with another a year later in 1998.
