Steven Peter Devereux Smith known as Steve Smith is an international cricketer and former captain of the Australian national cricket team. Smith is regarded as one of the world’s greatest batsmen, playing in the 2015 and 2023 Cricket World Cups, the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup, and the 2023 ICC World Test Championship final.
Smith’s mother is English, hence him holding dual British and Australian citizenships. He also briefly played in the UK in 2007 when he joined Ken cricket league’s Sevenoaks Vine. In 2008 he debuted for New South Wales, his first class debut, and within a year, had a batting average of over 50.
Smith made his international debut for Australia against Pakistan in early 2010. He also made One Day International debut the same month. Smith returned to test cricket in 2013/4 and was called up for the Tri-Series in Zimbabwe. Smith took the Australian captaincy in 2015, a position he held until 2018. He was involved in a ball tampering incident and along with vice captain David Warner was suspended from the team and faced a year long ban.
Smith re-entered the world of international cricket in 2019 and toured internationally over the next three years, attaining the position of Vice-Captain of Australia in 2021. He was dropped for the squad in mid-2024 after a poor run.
